A business career list is just that: a list. It doesn’t contain any details about the various careers or prerequisites, but it can be very useful. When you are just starting out in the world and don’t really have a direction yet, it can be best to start by painting with broad brush strokes. Take a business career list and simply read down the list. Cross off the ones that don’t appeal to you at all. Hate math? Then accounting won’t be for you. No talent for design? Then cross off graphic design.
This simple approach will help you see that even if you haven’t narrowed your choice down too specifically, you have still ruled out a lot of possibilities. Selecting a business career can really begin this simply—as a process of elimination. Next you want to take a look at what is still there on the list. Try to generalize about what you see. Are you drawn to marketing and sales? Or is your interest more in managerial work? Are you interested in international business or do you prefer to be behind the scenes? Once you have made these determinations you know a bit more about yourself. Don’t complete your career-choice efforts with this simple list. Now that you know what type of work you are looking for, a great deal more research into just what that career is really like is in order. From your research, you will be able to make an informed choice.
