Warehouse work is one way to break into the business world. There is nothing wrong with starting your career as a warehouse stock clerk. If you demonstrate excellent effort and above-average skill, you will soon be promoted to a warehouse manager. Remember, although many in entry-level positions don’t show up to work on time and goof off, those are not the folks who get promoted. Don’t follow the example of those who will remain stock clerks forever. Act like a business man or woman, no matter what level your job, and soon you will be seen as one and will receive that promotion. As a manager you will handle receiving, handling, storing, and distribution of goods and materials. You must be highly organized and efficient.
If you handle yourself well as a manager, you have shown your mettle. But you may have a new problem on your hands: the warehouse won’t want to let you go, because you are so good at your job! You have to let supervisors know that you are upwardly mobile and not interested in remaining a warehouse manager forever. You want to move up into the business end of things. If one warehouse won’t allow you to make that transition, surely another one will. As someone with experience at all levels of the business, you will be highly valuable to a wide variety of companies dealing in warehoused goods.
