An undergraduate business internship is really one long job interview. If you impress the superiors, you could end up with a great first job. That means that while other students are stuck slinging hash over the summer and still trying to land their first great business opportunity, you will be making your way to a well-paid entry-level job.
But if you want to succeed, you need to keep in mind that some of the essential aspects of any great job interview apply to internships as well. For instance, you’ll want to:
- dress appropriately
- understand the corporate culture
- be on time
- know your etiquette
- stay healthy
This last tip is a seldom considered one, but extremely important. How can you survive your summer-long job interview if you are out many of those days with illness. Some illnesses can’t be helped, but as far as the common cold is concerned, be sure to wash your hands frequently and you can prevent it from attacking you. And never never show up or take a day off because of a hangover. If you feel badly, fake it and fake it well. They say three quarters of any job is just showing up, so be sure that sickness doesn’t hold you back from starting your career with a bang.
