When, as a law student, you land an internship, it is an opportunity that could lead to a great career. It can be hard to know just how to act and what is expected of you on your first real law job, so take these seven tips to ensure that you are successful not only in terms of your career, but also in terms of networking and meeting connections that could help you get future jobs.
- First of all, be sure to act natural. Don’t force an overly formal demeanor, although you do want to be respectful. Remember that most hiring is done simply because the boss likes the employee and thinks he or she would be an enjoyable person to have around. Just be yourself.
- Sometimes there isn’t a lot of work for an intern to do. Don’t leave early! Resist the urge to show up late or take long lunch breaks too. The boredom can be excruciating, but always find things to do, even if it means emptying the wastebaskets and polishing your desk.
- Be flexible. You should be willing and able to handle anything thrown at you. The company wants to see if you are adaptable or if you are only willing to do things that are of interest to you. Make it clear that you are a team player who will do whatever work is required.
