If you are interested in a career in business management, congratulations! You have selected one of the fastest growing and most important careers in business today. After all, nothing can get accomplished in business without excellent management. 
But is management the right career for you? Let’s look at some of the positive aspects of the position. Of course career managers are paid more than the people they manage and they appear to have more power and status. The CEO of a company is a manager at the very top level, and his or salary and status reflect that.
However, there are some downsides to having a career as a manager in a business environment too. The primary one is the fact that if anything goes wrong in your department, you are typically the one to blame. You will get to do hiring, but you’ll have to do the firing as well, and most folks don’t enjoy that at all. When you are the boss, you are at the top, and it can be lonely at the top. Workers can’t pal around with you like they do with each other. Just by the nature of your career as a manager and the dictates of business, you have to keep a certain professional distance when you are a manager or boss. Finally, when you are the boss, somebody always wants your job. Your underlings can only advance if they find a way to move you out of your office and move themselves in. When this happens, if you are lucky, this will mean advancement in your business’ management career hierarchy. If you are unlucky, or don’t prove yourself sufficiently, you may get a pink slip! So keep in mind, business management career hunters out there, that with every rose there is a thorn. It doesn’t mean the job isn’t for you, this is simply a word to the wise. Know what you are getting into when you decide to get into management!
