Last week we published a post about Frank’s Good Karma List Machine software and this week we want to follow up on that to talk about the top mistakes that we see our clients and our own team making while using email lists to market products and services.

  1. Selling too often: If you are constantly sending out affiliate offers and asking for everyone to get out your wallets you will have unsubscribe and spam rates of 10-20% at a minimum.  Only sell within 20-40% of all email messages sent out to your list.
  2. Not giving away value: You HAVE to give away massive value within your emails to create goodwill, a strong brand, good reputation and to generate word of mouth buzz.  Our firm gets referred to additional clients hundreds of times every year because of the free resources we provide access to on our websites, we suggest you try to do the same. Give away far more than expected and twice as much as your closest competitors.
  3. Email Frequency: If you email your list more than 1 time per week or less than one time every 4 weeks you may be losing or annoying your audience. If you don’t have enough products, resources, and free stuff to send to your list we recommend that need fueling your motivation to create these materials.  Anyone can create screen capture videos, audio interviews, book summaries, and blog posts which can help their target potential clients.
  4. No Creation:  We have found that the most success with email list marketing results from creating genuinely valuable resources and marketing your own products through your lists.  The reasons behind this could stretch through many blog posts but there is just much more long-term value for your clients if you, the expert on who they are create the resources directly for them.

Building niche lists of prospects is an online marketing 101 tactic, but like any area of business there are always ways to improve effectiveness and efficiency in what you are doing.  Our team has built dozens of email lists of clients and potential clients within our work consisting of over 200,000 professionals.

Based on our experience here are our top 6 tips on listing building that you can put to use right now without spending any money:

  1. Don’t use double opt-in confirmations, they will kill the growth of your email list
  2. Always include  unsubscribe button or you will get manual unsubscribe requests that waste your time and result in more spam button hits
  3. Email your list every 1.5-4 weeks, any more and you will annoy most types of potential clients and any less you will be forgotten about
  4. Deliver something of value in at least 60% of your emails to keep professionals on your list and addicted to your brand
  5. A great way to introduce some products to your list is to make up a list of top 15 resources within a niche and have 3-5 of those be commercial products that are for sale, while the rest are free resources
  6. In some markets 5 opt-ins a day of very qualified potential clients is great, in others 50/day can be disappointing. Consider the traffic quality before judging the quality too much, test conversion rates.
