Every business has its mission statement, but if you are changing careers, you too should write one. Think of your job search as a job in and of itself. It is like running a small business. Each day you peruse the internet and the newspaper; each day you work on your resume; each day you interview, investigate and research appropriate companies. Did you ever realize that you work harder on the job of getting a job than on any actual career position? That is because finding employment is crucial, so pursue it like a business, with mission and vision statements, budgets, and ethics.
Your mission statement should reflect what exactly you hope to accomplish. That means it should describe in detail the job you seek, including salary, nature of the work, hours, benefits, etc.
Your vision statement is a more philosophical document that explains your overall purpose in your job search. Do you have a vision of a fulfilling family life, a beautiful summer house, exciting business travel, learning on the job, or some other life goal? Your vision should be a picture of the life and work you hope to do. Your “vision of the future.”
Every good business has a set of ethics by which it operates. Some businesses are determined to “go green” while others are very specific about their ethical financial practices. Business ethics gain businesses good reputations among their customers, and that adds up to a lot of profit in the long run. Your statement of ethics will help you to feel good and personally powerful about the decisions you make in your job search.
