Show business folks know about poise. Making a great first impression is their business, and when actors have to go from one go-see to another, one audition to another, they know that looking their best and performing at the top of their game is essential. Those in other business pursuits would do well to take some tips from actors and other show business people. After all, your business interview is your audition, and just as an actor may have to play a role, sing, or dance at an interview, you will have to do the corporate professional version of this.
Tip #1: roll with the punches. So many actors have practiced for days to be perfect at an audition, only to trip on a camera cord and fall flat on their faces. Does that mean they won’t get the part? Certainly not! How you recover from a fall tells so much about your character, your sense of humor, your determination, and your poise than anything else! So, if something goes wrong, show them you can roll with the punches.
Tip #2: always have professional “pictures.” Actors need pictures to complete the package for an audition. As a business person, your resume or CV is your picture. It is not just a picture of you, but of your experience, including the people you have worked with or are connected to, and your aptitudes. Be confident about this “picture.” Don’t apologize for it, don’t over-explain it. Let it speak for itself.
