If you fancy yourself an inventor, you must know how to research your idea in order to establish a patent. Without knowledge of how to make your idea work, it is not something you can copyright or patent. You have to be able to present a detailed, illustrated description of the product, including its uses, intents, and methods of operation. If you do so, you may be able to get a patent, but it is not guaranteed. Many ideas, for one reason or another, are simply not patentable. If your idea is patentable, know that it can take years to obtain that patent, so a lot of hard work is ahead of you.
When you are working to patent your product, you must watch out for “invention promotion” scams. These companies will take your money with a promise to obtain a patent for you, but in the end often no patent will materialize, or the one you get will be false. There are better ways to obtain a patent, so be sure to check with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for proper procedures and the Federal Trade Commission for warnings as to scammers.
