her your interest in in the financial and economic sector, in non-profit work, or in international relations, the world of micro-finance could be a fascinating place to intern for a summer. Micro-finance institutions loan small amounts of money to international borrowers such as women’s collectives, farming communities, and craft-making organizations. They exist in order to help international communities—often in the third world—develop and thrive. If you are interested in advancing your career with an internship in micro-finance, follow the following six steps to get in touch with the right company for you and your needs:
- Ask yourself what you want out of the internship. Do you want to go to a certain geographic location? Is it necessary to get paid? Is there a certain area of micro-finance (such as women’s issues or European-small-business) that fascinates you?
- Ask yourself what you have to offer. How can your skills be useful to a micro-finance institution? If you have relevant banking experience, more opportunities will be available to you.
- Search for publicized internship opportunities. Look online and at your local library.
- Most opportunities will not be publicized, so call the companies you are interested in and ask for an interview.
- When you get an internship offer, ask for details. If it is overseas, will you be required to pay your own transportation? What hours will be required? What kind of accommodations will you get?
- Finally: go for it! An international internship working with an organization that helps others to help themselves can be one of the most rewarding experiences of a lifetime.
