Many families today, especially those with a history in the business world, tend to project the hope that their offspring will go into business as well. Many young college attendees feel a great deal of pressure because of this. It is quite common, and college guidance counselors, time and time again, caution students from falling victim to it. Of course one must respect the wishes of one’s parents, especially if they are paying for college, but it is a huge mistake to follow a certain career just because it is a family tradition.
Your career choice is a very personal choice. It determines how you will spend most of the days of your life in the future, so unless you really feel you have a call to heal, do not become a doctor. Unless you really enjoy marketing and all the creativity it requires, do not become a marketing manager. Think of the things you enjoy doing and the lifestyle you envision for yourself in the future when determining your college major, minor, and focus. Remember that the old “mid life crisis” is a real thing and usually happens to those who have not followed their hearts throughout their lives. Avert it now by ensuring your business career choice is yours and yours alone.
