Internships offer great opportunities for business development. Whether you are a college student preparing to graduate, a master’s student preparing a thesis, or even a high school student getting his or her first taste of the working world, internships in businesses of interest to you will offer you many incredible opportunities for developing yourself as a business person. When you do land an internship, one important thing to remember, in order to take full advantage of the opportunity, is to create a portfolio.
A portfolio demonstrates everything you accomplished in your internship including research papers you have compiled, memos you wrote, and projects you helped to bring to fruition. If the work you are doing in your internship is mostly oral and presentation oriented, your portfolio is going to suffer. If this is the case, there are a few strategies you can use:
- Ask your boss for written work.
- Volunteer for work on special projects.
- Show written work you have created before in order to build the boss’s confidence in your ability to take on such assignments.
Getting that portfolio together an essential part of any internship if you want it to lead to certain employment, so don’t neglect it!
