It’s a competitive world these days, so those who want to really succeed need to start early. That means not waiting until college to do your first internship. After all, other high school kids are going to be landing their first jobs in retail or restaurants, but you could have your as an engineering assistant, a photo assistant, or a go-fer in an advertising agency. Such work will not only help you to get a great job later, it will help you get into a great college as well. A resume that shows interest in moving ahead in the world will always be impressive.
When you seek an internship, remember that you aren’t making a lifelong commitment to any profession. An internship is a great way to get exposure to a profession to see if it is for you. Do you like the lifestyle you see the workers living? Do you like the work they do? These are the questions you’ll ask yourself while you work at your internship. If in the end you don’t decide to pursue that profession, that’s okay. You tried something and made a decision, and that alone is excellent experience to have. Future employers will respect you for getting out there and looking into all the things that interest you, rather than simply working at the local Taco Bell.
