Do you have the right aptitude for a career in international business? It’s unlike any other career in that you will be traveling quite a bit and interacting with many high-powered business men and women from different cultures. Let’s take a look at the six-point checklist to determine your aptitude for this exciting but demanding career:
1. Do you tend to be judgemental?
You will have to work within another culture and adapt to its customs, beliefs and attitudes, even if they contradict your own. Building relationships across cultures, nonjudgementally, will be key to your success.
2. Are you people-oriented, or task oriented?
As a corporate manager, you certainly have the objective of accomplishing a certain task, but in many cultures, the most important aspect of life is community support. Are you willing to do the research into each country you visit to ensure that you support their cultural needs in the appropriate way?
3. Are you flexible?
Dealing with the unexpected is going to be a big part of your job when you begin to work in the international sector. Cultural expectations change with each new country, as do locations, governments, laws, and business procedures. Can you adapt?
As you can see, there is a lot to consider when thinking about committing to a career in international business. The challenges are many, but, for the right person, the rewards are immeasurable!
